Spot On Networks Set To Bring Community-Wide WiFi To The Largest Public Housing Community in the United States

Spot On Networks deploying Queensbridge Connected, a community-wide WiFi network to Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, NY

Spot On Networks deploying Queensbridge Connected, a community-wide WiFi network to Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, NY

New Haven, CT November 07, 2016  The October issue of Wired Magazine features an article by Gideon Lewis-Kraus, entitled “Wiring the Unwired:” Inside the Battle to Bring Broadband to New York’s Public Housing, which details the community-wide WiFi network that is currently under development by Spot On Networks (SON) at Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, New York. The October issue of Wired was guest edited by President Barack Obama.

“Wiring the Unwired” discusses the importance of entrepreneurial companies, like SON and the development of disruptive technologies, such as SON’s managed property-wide UserSafe® WiFi, that can make communications technologies available to all at little or no cost. Lewis-Kraus also mentions the importance of the success of this project as being an integral part of smaller companies breaking into an “otherwise protected market”. The “predatory pricing” habits of telecom companies are also mentioned, which in some instances, allow telecom giants to make a margin on broadband services that can be as high as 90 percent despite offering inconsistent coverage that leaves many residents dissatisfied. Companies like SON and initiatives like the wireless broadband initiative at Queensbridge are essential to “bridging the digital divide” and making quality internet access, at little to no cost, available to everyone.

SON has also committed to employing a certain number of Queensbridge residents as a part of the city contract and the Wired article interviews two of these residents who are some of the first to be employed by SON. Lewis-Kraus states in his article, “Spot On emphasizes that it’s putting a lot of energy into working with the community; it’s not just deploying wireless, the company says, but creating local jobs to help maintain the service”.

Spot On Networks, the leading provider of managed wireless solutions to the U.S. multifamily/ multitenant industry was awarded a contract by The New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) on behalf of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) that has made Spot On Network the Wireless Broadband Service Provider for Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, Queens, NY.

Dick Sherwin, CEO of Spot On Networks and 2016 Wireless Hall of Fame inductee stated, “We are honored to be bringing WiFi access to Queensbridge Houses”, he went on to say, “Along with Mayor de Blasio, we deeply believe that all New York City residents, regardless of income, should have access to secure and reliable wireless broadband. Wireless, high speed access is a utility that residents need to pay bills, look for jobs, do school work and even make phone calls. We are proud to provide NYC residents with the wireless internet access that is necessary to be successful and competitive in the Digital Age”.

Queensbridge is the largest public housing development in North America with 3,149 units and an estimated 7,000 residents across 26 clusters of 95 buildings in two adjacent complexes. The contract is to provide wireless internet speeds of up to 25 Mbps to each household as well as network monitoring and management with a 24/7 help desk for Queensbridge residents and staff. The Queensbridge WiFi network will include high speed wireless internet for laptops, smartphones and tablets, WiFi calling capability with Quality of Service and integration for the Internet of Things. The Queensbridge WiFi network will allow many residents to save money on comprehensive data services while having access to WiFi calling using their smartphones, thus comporting with the Federal Communications Commission’s Lifeline Report and Order of April 27, 2016 bridging the digital divide.

Spot On Networks, LLC (“SON”) Announces WiFiPlus+™

Spot On Networks, LLC (“SON”) today announced their launch of WiFiPlus+™; Managed WiFi Networks combined with energy management, building automation and security monitoring.

New Haven, CT (PRWEB) September 04, 2012

Spot On Networks, LLC (“SON”) today announced the launch of a new service: WiFiPlus+™. WiFiPlus+™ combines fully managed and monitored Wi-Fi networks with wireless energy management, building automation and security monitoring for the multifamily, hospitality and commercial industries.

The benefits to buildings and communities are two-fold. The fully managed Wi-Fi backbone allows properties to offer the necessary Wi-Fi Internet amenity to patrons without having to manage Internet service issues, worry about bandwidth or offer customer support. In addition, the Wi-Fi backbone allows for energy management, building automation and security monitoring, wirelessly, which replaces the need for more expensive wired systems. Buildings can experience significant utility cost reduction, up to 25%, by implementing an energy management system, which often allows for the property to offer the much desired Wi-Fi amenity for free.

Energy management allows properties to remotely monitor their energy usage, pinpoint areas of high usage and control HVAC via mobile device applications. Building automation allows for property managers or individual guests/ residents to control virtually every aspect of home living, including temperature controls, appliance controls, A/V equipment, lighting, blinds and more. Security monitoring allows for remote video monitoring of entire properties or individual residences via mobile applications. These three Wi-Fi backbone applications allow for buildings to implement these systems at significantly less cost than wired systems. Wi-Fi backbone applications can be installed in new buildings or retrofit.
SON recently announced the deployment of a WiFiPlus+™ system at Rudin Management, Inc.’s 130 West 12th Street apartment homes. “Providing energy monitoring and control functions in our buildings helps to engage the condominium owner, reduce carbon footprint, honor our corporate responsibility to the city in which we live, and do well by doing good,” according to John J. Gilbert, III, Rudin’s Chief Operating Officer. He went on to add: “These advanced technology systems and services that benefit condominium owners, including energy management and wireless services, will eventually be like the elevators required in a high rise building”.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of our WiFiPlus+™ services. WiFiPlus+™ is the future of Wi-Fi networks. All buildings need Wi-Fi; WiFiPlus+™ allows properties to benefit from offering Wi-Fi, reduce their carbon footprint, experience huge energy cost reductions, all while outfitting their property with a future-proofed Wi-Fi solution”, said Dick Sherwin, SON’s, CEO.

About Rudin Management Company: The Rudin Family’s real estate holdings rank as one of the largest and most respected privately owned portfolios in the city. The fact that Rudin builds, owns, leases and manages its buildings attracts many of New York’s most prestigious residents.

WIRED Magazine Business Conference Utilizes Spot On Networks WiFi to Enhance Mobile Device Coverage

Spot On Networks Deploys Enhanced Mobile Coverage Wi-Fi Network to Keep Executives Connected During WIRED Magazine Business Conference: “Disruptive By Design In Partnership with MDC Partners”

New Haven, CT Spot On Networks (www.spotonnetworks.com) May 8, 2012
Spot On Networks (www.spotonnetworks.com), the largest provider of Managed Wi-Fi Networks to the multifamily housing industry and a leading provider of Wi-Fi networks to the hospitality and commercial industries, announced today that it would be installing a Spot On UserSafe™ Temporary Cell Booster Network to support mobile device usage at the WIRED Magazine Business Conference: Disruptive By Design In Partnership with MDC Partners.

The WIRED Magazine Conference is a “one-day symposium featuring C-level executives and thought-leaders featuring groundbreaking discussions on disruptive business practices, ideas and innovations”. The WIRED Conference will be attended by more than 400 executives and will be held at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City.

“Smartphones and tablets are an essential part of staying connected to the office, however a poor indoor cell phone signal can make this a challenge,” said Michael Cummiskey of Wi-Ex. “With Spot On Networks help, we provided the attendees of the WIRED Business Conference with the ability to stay on top of emails, phone calls and texts, as well as Tweet the latest conference news all while still enjoying the conference.”

According to William Howard, Vice President of Project Management for Spot On Networks, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, “is a cellular dead zone due to the building’s exterior construction – primarily the lead tinted windows. In order to ensure that the executives attending the WIRED conference had secure and complete data, voice and Internet support on their mobile devices such as iPads™ and iPhones™, it was necessary for us to deploy an enhanced network within the three-story building using Wi-Ex zBoost cellular signal boosters.”

About Wi-Ex

Wi-Ex (http://www.wi-ex.com), a leading provider of cell phone signal boosters, developed zBoost, the first consumer-priced signal booster that “extended cell zones” for the small office/home office cell phone market. Wi-Ex has expanded their “extending cell zone coverage” beyond consumers to corporate enterprises and large commercial applications. From M2M applications to large commercial complexes to the rising number of teleworkers, the zBoost line provides a business-centric solution for improving poor in-door cell phone coverage domestically and internationally. The zBoost product line works with most carriers in the US and abroad including AT&T, Sprint, Vodaphone, Verizon and T-Mobile. The award-winning zBoost home and office solutions help today’s connected consumers including iPhone, iPad, Android (DROID), BlackBerry, and smartphone users with dropped calls and slow data. They were awarded a 2007 and 2010 Consumer Electronics Association Innovations Honoree by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and a 2011 EXC!TE honoree. They also were selected as a finalist for the 2007 and 2009 CTIA Emerging Technologies (E-Tech) Award. As the leader, zBoost has more awards, more sales and more locations than all their competitors combined. Wi-Ex continues to develop innovative products to meet the demands of an increasingly wireless society by enhancing wireless signals.

More and more articles alerting technology users to the dangers of unsecured Wi-Fi networks are appearing online and in the news. As JOHN CRUDELE, Business Columnist of the New York Post, wrote on April 7th, 2011: “you may never again consider surfing the Web by attaching your laptop to any outside wireless network — including the one at your favorite coffee shop, at the airport or in your hotel.”

New Haven, CT (PRWEB) April 19, 2011

Spot On Networks, LLC (“Spot On”) and GuestWiFi today announced the completion of their merger of all of their joint hospitality services in which Wi-Fi high speed wireless broadband internet access is provided to hotels across the United States. All of the hotel clients will be serviced by GuestWiFi, the Hospitality Division of Spot On Networks. Although many of the client base of hotels are part of economy chains, such as Holiday Inn Express, luxury hotels such as the Brazilian Court in Palm Beach, FL are also being served by this division.

Joe Germanotta, previously, the majority owner of GuestWiFi, will become the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hospitality Division of Spot On Networks, LLC. In summarizing the merger, he said “Due to the increased demand for Wi-Fi services in hotels, coupled with the need for additional security and reliability of wireless services for not only internet access, but for energy management, I felt it was important to bring added resources to bear on this industry group.” Mr. Germanotta went on to say “Because of my other responsibilities and the role that I play in the activities of the Lady Gaga organization, I felt it was important to our hotel client base to ensure a high level of customer service. I want to maintain my relationship with our hotel clients and this was the best way to accomplish all of our objectives”.    Mr. Germanotta is the father of Lady Gaga.

Dick Sherwin, Chief Executive Officer of Spot On Networks said: “Spot On Networks has been providing back office services to GuestWiFi for some time, which has made the hotel service reliable and helped expand growth. The new requirements being demanded by hotels, including multi-homing bandwidth, guest authentication, bandwidth management and CALEA compliance, have already been addressed by Spot On’s design team, and have been implemented in many locations over the last two years. We expect to provide these services to hotels easily and smoothly, enhancing hotel internet access services.”

Spot On Networks, LLC Announces Carrier Class Wi-Fi Services for Smartphones and Tablets equipped with IEEE802.11g/n.

Spot On Networks, LLC (“Spot On”) announced today support for all IEEE802.11g and IEEE802.11n equipped Smartphones and Tablets using its proprietary platforms for service provision, monitoring and control.

New Haven, CT (PRWEB) February 18, 2011

Spot On Networks, LLC (“Spot On”) announced today support for all IEEE802.11g and IEEE802.11n equipped Smartphones and Tablets using its proprietary platforms for service provision, monitoring and control. Any Wi-Fi equipped Smartphone user is able to use Spot On’s networks for data services in an unlimited amount included in the monthly subscription. T-Mobile subscribers are also able to automatically use voice services as well as data services on Spot On’s networks with T-Mobile’s UMA services.

“With the billions of devices projected to be connected via mobile broadband, and a 26 times growth in data from 2010 to 2015 according to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, we have been advocating the use of Wi-Fi to offload Smartphone data usage for some time. The spate of announcements from the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona this week, is indicative of the change in view by many of the world’s largest mobile operators, that Wi-Fi is significant for the boosting of capacity and coverage in mobile broadband networks”, said Dick Sherwin, CEO of Spot On.

He went on to say “Recent interviews by Fierce Broadband Wireless in which Cisco representatives pointed to a “peaceful co-existence” between Wi-Fi and 4G, and LR Mobile News articles indicating the need for carrier class Wi-Fi services to provide a consistent data off load experience, are examples of the dramatic change in viewpoints”.

Spot On’s use of the Wi-Fi frequency bands provide for over 300 Mhz of capacity in each building, compared to under 100 Mhz utilized by a mobile operator for an entire city, increasing the data capability that Spot On offers to complement the mobile operator. In addition to capacity, Wi-Fi networks are generally constructed inside a building instead of from the outside, meaning that signal strength as well as capacity is improved dramatically with a Wi-Fi network in a multifamily residential or multitenant commercial building”.

Because Wi-Fi networks operate on unlicensed frequencies, Spot On built Operational Support Systems that offer carrier grade quality services that are also secure and CALEA compliant. A comprehensive authentication process is automatically included with Spot On’s services.

A subscriber using Spot On’s services is able, on a single subscription, to utilize a computer such as a laptop, a gaming device or video streaming device like a Wii or Roku, and a Smartphone with unlimited data capacity for under $30 per month and have service throughout the residential or commercial building complex.

***Release from NBS VoICE***

January 25,2010
Spot On Networks Uses NBS VoICE for Call Center Management

Spot On Networks Uses NBS VoICE for Call Center Management /PRZOOM – Newswire/ – NBS VoICE Manager improves ACD, CDR and Auto Attendant functions for wireless internet provider Spot On Networks. Wayne, NJ, United States, 01/25/2010 – NBS, a fully integrated communication services provider, managed services provider and telecom reseller, recently implemented for Spot On Networks, of New Haven, CT, a comprehensive solution for their call center operations. NBS has a history of supporting call center applications with its integrated set of Internet based administrative tools for call centers known as the NBS VoICE Manager. VoICE Manager incorporates 5 valuable web based systems into its administrative portal giving companies the power to dictate the direction of inbound communications. The NBS VoICE Manager Console, Call Flow Manager, Queue Manager, Sound Manager and CDR Tool provide advanced call handling, routing, call recording and reporting functionality. NBS customer, Spot On Networks, a WISP providing managed Wi-Fi and other wireless connectivity, had a specific set of requirements for calls coming into their customer service center and other parts of the company. Don Robinson, the company’s Director of Operations was looking for a VoIP provider that could answer specific questions on the technical capabilities of their system as well as details on price and functionality. “We had some very specific needs” said Mr. Robinson, explaining that they “needed an ACD system for incoming customer service calls, plus the ability to pull call statistics for staffing and training purposes, as well as a full auto attendant with the option to use a live receptionist, depending on the time and circumstances.” In addition to providing telecom services, NBS had the PBX, interconnect and call center expertise to deliver the custom tailored call center solution Spot On was seeking. “There is no one-size-fits-all, cookie cutter solution in our experience” stated NBS president Russell Markman. “Each company communicates differently and needs to manage their call flow in unique ways” he added. This philosophy permeates NBS’s design of customer solutions, whether hosted voice, sip trunking, managed networks or voice and data connectivity. “We pride ourselves on our ability to deliver custom-built services that are the best fit for that particular customer’s application” he added. Developing its own hosted voice platform gives NBS the ability to work with their customers to provide additional functionality specific to their business needs. With its own team of in-house software developers, NBS has the capability of swiftly responding to end-user requests for new and innovative tools and features. “NBS has the ability to write their own code if necessary” Mr. Robinson stated. “The NBS approach was to fit their system to satisfy our needs and not the other way around” he added. Spot On implemented the NBS VoICE hosted solution, utilizing Polycom IP desk and conference phones. With very affordable per seat pricing and access to the VoICE Manager administrative portal, the company found an economical solution that fit perfectly with the requirements they laid out in the beginning of their search. Mr. Robinson reported that the installation process was quick and painless and that he was extremely satisfied with the results. “We have been so happy with the NBS experience that we have recommended them to other companies” said Mr. Robinson. About Spot On Networks Spot On Networks is a Wireless Internet Service Provider [WISP] providing cost effective managed Wi-Fi in medium to large multi-family properties and commercial common areas. Pronto, Spot On Networks, and GuestWiFi offer fast and cost-smart solutions for integration of customer service & Tier I/ Tier II network support in real time

GuestWiFi Successfully Merges Customer Service and Network Support into Spot On’s NOC for Quick Cost-Savings and Enhanced Service on Pronto’s UniFi OSS Managed Services Platform. Spot On Networks, headquartered in New Haven, CT, provides communications and internet services to businesses and residential subscribers. GuestWiFi, headquartered in New York City, provides network design, installation and management of Wi-Fi in hotels. Each company developed its business on Pronto Networks’ UniFI OSS and operates Wireless ISP networks using components of Pronto Networks Managed Services. “Pronto’s Managed Service offering enabled us to focus on the sales and marketing of a new amenity in the hospitality market segment,” says Joe Germanotta, President of GuestWiFi. “As our business evolved from ‘for-pay’ to ‘free-access’, Pronto’s MSP service platform proved a cost-effective way to adapt. Initially we used Pronto’s 24x7x365 customer service but maintained our own Tier I/II network support. As our business grew, so did the demands our customers made on customer service and network support. We began to look around for a solution. Spot On Networks provided a very cost-effective one.” I think our experience with Spot On will become a model for how a WISP can enhance service without investing in an expensive operations center and a substantial training and payroll commitment.” Joe Germanotta of GuestWiFi “Early on we decided it was crucial to maintain direct relationships with our WiFi subscribers and the management of the buildings where we provide service,” explains Richard Sherwin, President of Spot On Networks. “So we built our own customer service and network operations center in New Haven. This gave us a way to turn our real time monitoring ability into real time problem solving. We realized neither subscribers nor building management would tolerate anything less than quick, personal attention. Providing that has been a big part of our success. Now we have figured out how to share that with other WISPS.” Both GuestWiFi and Spot On Networks deploy network architecture that includes leased line broadband connections, multiple wireless access points and a Pronto Service Controller or Gateway. The Pronto device provides the authentication and login pages, the walled garden features, and the traffic management capabilities that enforce the user’s Service Level Agreement. “With the exception of the access points, our network architecture is basically the same as GuestWiFi’s architecture,” Sherwin explains. “Since we both utilize Pronto Networks controllers and gateways and the UniFI OSS, we were able to seamlessly merge GuestWiFi’s customer service and Tier I/II network support function into Spot On’s network operation center.” GuestWiFi simply ported its existing 800 number to Spot On and we quickly integrated its 24x7x365 customer service function into Spot On’s system.” “Spot On Networks added responsive and rapid network monitoring and Tier I / Tier II technical support for GuestWiFi,” confirms Germanotta. “It was a very cost efficient way for us to enhance the service we provide. I think this will become a model for how a WISP can enhance service without investing in an expensive operations center and a substantial training and payroll commitment.” “We had a very smooth transition,” Germanotta adds, “and are very pleased. Now, customer service representatives speaking with hotel guests can communicate real-time issues directly with engineers in the network operations center. As a result, situations that may affect multiple users are proactively resolved. Since we partnered with Spot On, the number of customer service calls has gone down and customer satisfaction has gone up.” “Our network operations team is very hands on,” Sherwin explains. “For example, if we get multiple calls from one location, say a particular hotel, our customer service manager immediately escalates this information to the Tier I engineer who investigates the OSS location information and reacts. If one or more access points are down, our engineer calls the site, notifies management of the problem, and talks them through power cycling the units. Sharing customer service network information with Tier I/Tier II support in real-time makes a significant improvement in network reliability and customer satisfaction. And for the hotel front desk or building management to get this information in real-time is unique and is the quickest way to get a frustrated user on line.” “This is all possible because of Pronto’s components,” Germanotta repeats, “and our experience can easily be duplicated through Spot On by any other service provider utilizing Pronto systems and components.” Spot On Networks provides Wi-Fi Internet service in MultiFamily residential buildings in major U.S. cities using the Pronto UniFi Wi-Fi Managed Services platform. GuestWiFi provides wireless Internet service to hotels across the United States. Pronto Networks provides carrier-class Operations Support Systems (OSS) that enables network operators to deploy and manage WLAN networks. Both Spot On and GuestWiFi rely on Pronto systems and components.

Spot On Networks Announces ‘Finger Friendly’ Sign On for Mobile Devices

Mobile device screens are inherently small making full size, unformatted login screens difficult to navigate. Spot On has created sign on screens that automatically format to the mobile device’s screen creating easy and quick access to their WiFi networks. New Haven, CT (PRWEB) July 4, 2009 — Spot On Networks, today, announced that users who have mobile phones or Smartphones, will now be able to sign on to its Wi Fi high speed internet networks in an easy to use format, customized for the screen of each individual mobile device. Signing on to the Internet using a mobile phone or Smartphone has proved to be difficult since the device screens are considerably different than standard computer screens, and often the reformatting is difficult to read. Spot On Networks developed sign on screens that automatically format for each individual device so that the information on the screen is easy to read, and data entry using either a soft or regular keyboard, is “finger friendly”. As blogs and other forms of social media are being accessed by our users with Smartphones and other mobile devices, we wanted to make it simpler and more user friendly to sign on to our networks using these devices the software platform developed by our engineering group detects the specific device being utilized by the network user, and formats the screen for the sign on page accordingly “As blogs and other forms of social media are being accessed by our users with Smartphones and other mobile devices, we wanted to make it simpler and more user friendly to sign on to our networks using these devices”, said Dick Sherwin, Chief Executive Officer of Spot On Networks. He went on to say “the software platform developed by our engineering group detects the specific device being utilized by the network user, and formats the screen for the sign on page accordingly”. The Wi Fi Alliance, an organization driving the adoption of the worldwide standards for high speed wireless networking, has certified more than 5,000 devices for the IEEE802.11 (Wi Fi) standard and hundreds more each week. As a result, Wi Fi usage continues to experience rapid growth. About Spot On Networks: Spot On Networks is the largest service provider of high speed Wi Fi wireless Internet to the multifamily housing industry. Utilizing various technologies, Spot On Networks provides high speed wireless capabilities throughout a residential complex that replace the need for DSL or Cable Modem services while providing complete mobility within that complex.
